156 Dogs and Cats Saved from Distressing Conditions in Utah Hoarder’s Home

Press Release: Over 150 Dogs Rescued from Hoarder’s Utterly Neglected Home in Utah

Ogden, Utah – In a shocking case of animal hoarding, Ogden Police discovered over 150 dogs—and a few cats—living in deplorable conditions within a tiny, cluttered home last month. The homeowner, 73-year-old Miguel Salgado-Vargas, was absent during the police’s inspection, but bodycam footage obtained by KUTV reveals the harrowing scene that awaited the officers.

Upon entering the residence, officers were greeted by an overwhelming cacophony of barks and howls. The house, described as a "house of horrors," contained dozens of small dogs crammed into cardboard boxes amid piles of trash and decaying mattresses. Officers reported that the overwhelming stench necessitated the use of gas masks as they navigated the filthy environment.

Police were executing a welfare check when they made the grim discovery. Following the rescue, all 156 animals were transported to a local shelter, where most have since found new homes. Salgado-Vargas now faces 637 misdemeanor charges, including animal cruelty and kennel violations. The Weber County Animal Shelter has received an outpouring of support from the community, with numerous donations helping to care for the rescued animals.
