Highland, Utah Becomes First City in County to Allow Golf Carts on Streets

Highland, Utah, is paving the way for a unique mode of transportation as it becomes the first city in Utah County to permit golf carts on city streets. This decision follows a strong request from residents and was approved during a city council meeting, passing 4-1. Council Member Scott Smith voted against the measure, citing safety concerns, particularly in light of a recent golf cart accident in St. George, questioning the safety of allowing golf carts to share roads with vehicles traveling 25 mph or faster.

In contrast, Council Member Ron Campbell, who introduced the ordinance, expressed confidence in the safety of golf carts, noting that other communities allowing them have not reported significant issues. Effective immediately, the new rules permit golf carts on roads with speed limits of 25 mph during daylight hours and prohibit their use on state roads.

Local resident Aaron Gleave, who advocated for the change, highlighted the community-building aspect of using golf carts for short trips. He urged the city to consider expanding where golf carts can travel, aiming to enhance connectivity within Highland. Campbell noted that discussions are underway to potentially include higher-speed roads in the future.
