University of Utah Beach Volleyball Program Cut Despite Historic Season
SALT LAKE CITY — The University of Utah’s beach volleyball program was abruptly cut following its most successful season, leaving players and supporters shocked and devastated. On April 29, team members were called into a mandatory meeting, expecting discussions about future coaching after the recent retirement of head coach Brenda Whicker. Instead, they learned of the program’s cancellation.
Maeve Griffin, a graduate senior, expressed her dismay at the abrupt change, sharing that many, including incoming recruits, found out through media rather than the university directly. Teammate Sonja Wessel described the moment as "heartbreaking," explaining how their tight-knit community was torn apart just days after celebrating a record-breaking season, which included a spot in the top 25 and a historic 21-win tally.
Athletic Director Mark Harlan cited the decision stemmed from a lack of growth opportunities for the sport, stating, “We are not providing the world-class experience that we seek to provide to our student-athletes.” However, the athletes and alumni refuted this reasoning, noting the program’s achievements and the potential for continued success, especially as beach volleyball expands nationally.
Despite generating revenue close to $223,000 for the fiscal year, the program reported operating losses and was viewed as non-essential compared to the university’s more prominent sports.
In light of this decision, former player Melissa Powell has proposed a solution to reinstate the team, offering her new training facilities free of charge. The proposal has garnered community support, with a Change.org petition receiving over 5,300 signatures.
The players remain determined to advocate for their sport, emphasizing their commitment to the love of the game rather than financial incentives, as they strive to secure a future for Utah beach volleyball.
