Cam Rising Announces Medical Retirement from Football
Utah quarterback Cam Rising has announced his medical retirement from football due to a hand injury sustained during the 2024 season. The former Texas quarterback confirmed the news Wednesday, stating that after consulting with two orthopedic specialists, he has been advised he can no longer play the sport. Rising will seek a third medical opinion and undergo recommended surgery, focusing on his recovery while accepting the reality of his retirement.
The injury occurred early in the season during a game against Baylor, where Rising was pushed into a table at the Gatorade station. Following this, he attempted a return in October, starting against Arizona State but subsequently suffered a leg injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the season.
Rising’s college career has been plagued by injuries. After redshirting at Texas in 2018, he continued that trend at Utah the following year. In 2020, he began to make his mark by starting against USC, only to endure a season-ending shoulder injury. However, he saw a breakout in 2021, leading the Utes with 20 touchdown passes over 13 games. In 2022, he solidified his status as the starting quarterback, throwing for over 3,000 yards and achieving 26 touchdown passes, despite suffering a significant knee injury in the Rose Bowl that kept him out for the entire 2023 season.
Rising’s return for the 2024 season was highly anticipated, yet his participation was limited to just three games this year. Originally regarded as the No. 8 pro-style quarterback in the 2018 recruiting class, Rising shared the ranks with notable NFL talents like Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields. His dedication to football and palpable talent made his retirement a noteworthy moment for Utah and its fans.
