UCF Softball Makes History with Walk-Off Victory Over Utah in Big 12 Tournament
OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – In a thrilling finish, UCF’s Ashleigh Griffin made history with a seventh-inning walk-off home run, leading her team to a 7-5 victory over the Utah Utes in the opening matchup of the Big 12 Conference tournament at Devon Park. The redshirt junior launched her sixth home run of the season, marking UCF’s first-ever Big 12 tournament win and extending the Knights’ win streak to five games.
UCF had built a commanding 5-0 lead, thanks to strong performances from pitcher Isabella Vega and key offensive contributions, including a bases-loaded walk and a crucial two-run single from Madison Simon. However, Utah rallied dramatically in the seventh, scoring five runs to tie the game.
Griffin’s decisive swing came with two outs and a teammate on base, ensuring a swift comeback after Utah’s surge. “I just wanted to pass the bat to the next person,” she stated, emphasizing her team’s supportive culture. Coach Cindy Ball-Malone praised the team’s grit, noting their growth throughout the season.
UCF now advances to face the Arizona Wildcats in the tournament’s second round, with the matchup set for 6 p.m. ET.
