Landen King Transfers to Duke After Brief Stint in Portal
Landen King, the 6-foot-5, 230-pound tight end, has committed to Duke for his final year of eligibility, just a week after entering the transfer portal. King, previously a standout at Auburn, spent two seasons with the University of Utah but saw his role diminish significantly during his second year. After achieving 166 receiving yards in the 2023 season, he posted only three catches for 54 yards in 2024. His first reception of the season didn’t come until Week 10 against Colorado, and he managed just one touchdown—a 15-yard pass during a 28-14 victory over UCF.
Despite his earlier commitment to stay with the Utes, King’s prospects dimmed with the emergence of redshirt freshman Hunter Andrews and potential position shifts among teammates. Utah explored moving redshirt senior Otto Tia from receiver to tight end, further complicating King’s position on the roster.
While King’s departure may be a loss for Utah, coach Kyle Whittingham’s staff continues to strengthen their receiving corps. The Utes welcomed Cal transfer Tobias Merriweather, a 6-foot-5 wideout, on the same day King announced his decision, further bolstering their passing game for the upcoming season. Additionally, Southern Miss transfer Larry Simmons had committed to Utah in late April.
As the Utes adjust their roster in preparation for the next season, King’s shift to Duke opens new opportunities for both him and the Utah program, allowing for further growth and mobility among players.
