TYLER, Texas (May 6, 2025) – UT Tyler Engineering Student Secures Prestigious Internship
Derick Phanos, a graduate mechanical engineering student from Ghana at The University of Texas at Tyler, has been selected for the highly competitive 2025 JUMP into STEM Building Technology Internship Program at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in Tennessee. He is one of only ten students nationwide awarded this opportunity based on his academic excellence, successful participation in the JUMP into STEM Collegiate Building Science Competition, and a robust application.
During his internship, Phanos will gain hands-on experience with state-of-the-art laser-scanning equipment and innovative software aimed at analyzing flat roofs for potential ponding water issues. This problem is critical, as stagnate water can lead to leaks and structural damage, yet it often goes undetected due to a lack of adequate analysis tools.
Dr. Nelson Fumo, an associate professor of mechanical engineering at UT Tyler and Phanos’ faculty adviser during the competition, emphasized the importance of this experience. "This accomplishment not only exposes Derick to cutting-edge research but also helps him develop professional skills, expand his network, and gain firsthand expertise in a critical field," said Fumo.
Phanos is set to graduate with a master’s degree in mechanical engineering next spring, aiming to focus his career on building material science and nanoengineering. He also serves as a research assistant in UT Tyler’s Jasper Department of Chemical Engineering.
The university, classified by Carnegie as a doctoral research institution, continues to enhance educational and healthcare outcomes in East Texas and beyond, promoting excellence in education and research across its multiple campuses.
Phanos’ participation in this internship showcases his hard work, talent, and dedication to applying engineering solutions to real-world challenges, positioning him as a future leader in his field.
