Protect Medicaid Utah Coalition Mobilizes Against Proposed Cuts

Salt Lake City, UT—In response to the potential cuts to Medicaid, the Protect Medicaid Utah coalition has launched an initiative to rally public support for the healthcare program critical to over 352,000 Utahns. This diverse coalition, which includes organizations such as the Disability Law Center, Voices for Utah’s Children, and the American Cancer Society, emphasizes the necessity of Medicaid, especially for children, individuals with disabilities, and low-income families.

During a press conference held at Pioneer Park on May 6, 2025, advocates voiced serious concerns over looming federal budget proposals that could threaten Medicaid funding by as much as $880 billion. Stacy Stanford from the American Cancer Society stated, “We need the public to make it clear how much they support the Medicaid program,” highlighting the grave consequences of reducing healthcare access.

Coalition leaders pointed to a state-level proposal requiring work reporting for recipients, which could complicate enrollment procedures. “These proposals can create barriers for those who already struggle,” said Nate Crippes from the Disability Law Center. Supporters, holding signs declaring “essential care” and “family stability,” shared personal stories, illustrating Medicaid’s role in their lives.

The coalition is currently focused on raising awareness about potential cuts and encouraging the public to submit comments supporting Medicaid. With 73% of Utah’s Medicaid funding sourced from the federal government, the coalition stresses the importance of public advocacy. Angela Turner, a coalition member, poignantly remarked, “These are not just numbers; they are the health and well-being of families.”

Time is critical as officials consider potential amendments to Medicaid. The coalition urges Utahns to speak out and support the program through various means, including sharing their personal experiences and reaching out to lawmakers. For more information, visit protectmedicaidutah.org.
