Quilting for Change: Millcreek Women Launch Nationwide Movement
MILLCREEK, Utah — In a cozy Millcreek home, a group of women is turning their quilting hobby into a powerful voice for change through a nationwide initiative called Peace by Piece. Spearheaded by the cross-partisan group Women Building Peace, the movement aims to communicate directly with lawmakers in Washington, D.C., by sewing messages into quilt squares.
Participants are stitching empowering phrases like “lead by example” and “stand for truth,” aiming to deliver these quilts to Congress on May 6. “With letters, it’s unclear where they go,” said participant Chante Shutzenegger, emphasizing the tangible nature of their work. “With this, we can actually see and feel it.”
The project draws inspiration from historical efforts, notably the suffrage movement, where quilting served as a communal voice for women. “There’s power when women come together,” said long-time quilter Margit Caine. Each quilt square reflects unique messages, focusing on themes like preserving the Constitution and ensuring checks and balances.
With participation from over 46 states, the group hopes for a positive reception from lawmakers. Shutzenegger expressed optimism, stating, “These quilts are stitched with so many voices, full of hope and love for this country.”
