Post Malone Concert Sets Off Earthquake Readings at University of Utah Seismology Lab

Press Release: Post Malone Concert Triggers Seismic Activity in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 4, 2025 (Gephardt Daily) — Post Malone’s concert at Rice-Eccles Stadium on May 2nd was not just a musical hit; it also registered as a seismic event. The University of Utah Seismograph Stations (UUSS) confirmed that the performance, attended by 45,000 fans alongside artists like Jelly Roll and Sierra Ferrell, produced significant seismic readings, surpassing those recorded during the University of Utah’s football games over the past two years.

UUSS noted that the concert generated distinctive seismic signals correlating with each song, with the highest amplitude shifting the ground by 0.009 mm, double that of a touchdown during football season. According to UUSS, the synchronized jumping of enthusiastic concert-goers contributed to the larger seismic signal.

In a striking comparison, a magnitude 3.9 earthquake that struck Utah just two days later resulted in even greater ground displacement of 0.017 mm at the stadium. Despite the excitement and seismic activity from the concert, UUSS emphasized that such concert-related movements are minimal compared to natural earthquakes.

The event underscored the powerful connection between music and the crowd, creating a memorable night in Salt Lake City.
