Press Release: Meteor Fireball Dazzles Northern Utah
SALT LAKE CITY — A spectacular fireball lit up the sky Saturday night, captivating viewers across northern Utah and beyond. The phenomenon, identified as a large meteor, drew numerous reports and sparked excitement among stargazers eager to share their experiences. Jason Trump, a NASA solar system ambassador and education coordinator at Clark Planetarium, noted that 49 sightings were officially logged with the American Meteor Society.
Witnesses reported seeing the vibrant fireball from various locations, including West Valley, Ogden, and Salt Lake City, with many capturing the moment on doorbell cameras and dashcams. The meteor’s green hue, attributed to nickel, further fueled interest in this celestial event.
Trump explained the fireball’s journey, stating it begins large in space before vaporizing and fragmenting upon entering the Earth’s atmosphere. While it’s uncertain whether any fragments remain, the meteor might be part of the ongoing Aquariid meteor shower, which peaks Monday night into Tuesday morning.
The Clark Planetarium remains a resource for those wishing to learn more about the universe, encouraging residents to explore the wonders above. Admission is free, and the facility is open seven days a week.
