Utah State Football Sees Positive Results in Spring Under Coach Bronco Mendenhall

Logan, UT – In his inaugural year as head coach, Bronco Mendenhall adopted a strategy focused on maintaining roster stability during Utah State’s spring football season. His primary aim was to navigate the potential pitfalls of the NCAA transfer portal and unregulated NIL by keeping the team’s core largely intact. This approach included limiting access to the team during the spring, a challenging decision for Mendenhall given the need to engage alumni and financial supporters.

Last year, while at New Mexico, Mendenhall faced a significant loss of 17 scholarship players during the transfer portal window. To avoid a repeat, he emphasized the importance of stability in roster management, stating, “The worst part of college football’s current structure is the spring window.” By closing practices to external observers, Mendenhall aimed to prevent any potential tampering that could lead to further player losses.

As spring practices concluded, Mendenhall reported success in retaining key players, with only a few entering the transfer portal. He expressed satisfaction with the relationships built and the culture being established within the team, highlighting initiatives aimed at fostering camaraderie and unity. “The culture is becoming very strong,” he noted, emphasizing its significance in shaping the football program’s future.

With a solid understanding of the team’s strengths and minimal injuries sustained throughout spring, Mendenhall is optimistic about the upcoming season. He plans to open up access to the program in fall camp to generate excitement ahead of the season opener against UTEP on August 30. Mendenhall’s methodical approach has left Utah State with a hopeful outlook as it prepares for the challenges ahead in the new season.
