Local Couple Arrested for String of Thefts at Target Stores
PROVO, Utah (KUTV) — A Provo couple has been arrested following a series of alleged thefts at Target stores throughout Utah Valley. Mercedesa Kvec, 22, and Sergiu Kvec, 23, face charges of retail theft exceeding $5,000, classified as a second-degree felony. The couple was initially taken into custody on April 1, with accusations tied to multiple "quick change" thefts.
According to court documents, the duo engaged in a deceitful scheme whereby they would pay for large purchases in cash while employing sleight of hand to retain part of the cash and the merchandise. These stolen items were later returned for full refunds at different locations, resulting in significant losses for the retailers.
As investigations progressed, authorities connected the couple to nine separate incidents across various Target locations. Mercedesa is linked to approximately $6,000 in losses, while Sergiu is associated with about $6,400.
Both have been convicted on their initial charges and remain incarcerated at the Utah County Jail. This case highlights the growing issue of organized retail theft in the region.
