Neon Trees’ Local Legends: The Used Celebrate 25 Years in Utah
As the influential band The Used embarks on their 25th anniversary tour, they return to their Utah roots, reminiscing about their humble beginnings in Orem. Formed in the early 2000s, the band faced skepticism from local venues unaccustomed to their heavy, emotionally charged sound reminiscent of Nirvana. Lead singer Bert McCracken recalls their first gig at Johnny B’s Comedy Club in Provo, leading to an immediate ban due to rowdy fans.
Despite these challenges, The Used cultivated a loyal following, fueled by their raw lyrics about addiction and longing. Their breakthrough came in 2002 during the Warped Tour in Salt Lake City when a power outage couldn’t stifle the audience’s fervor for their hit “Taste of Ink.” With that momentum, the band soon signed with Reprise Records, propelling them into the limelight.
This weekend, The Used will perform three consecutive nights at Salt Lake City’s Union Event Center, revisiting their first three albums. Reflecting on their journey, McCracken emphasizes their pride in their origins, while bassist Jeph Howard notes the importance of evolving within their art. As they celebrate their legacy, The Used expresses gratitude for their devoted fans who have supported them through thick and thin.
