Meta Faces Multi-Million-Dollar Defamation Lawsuit from Conservative Activist Robby Starbuck
In a groundbreaking move, conservative activist Robby Starbuck has filed a multi-million-dollar defamation lawsuit against Meta, alleging that the company’s AI tool falsely accused him of illegal activities and antisemitic views. This lawsuit has sparked significant attention from lawmakers, including Utah Sen. Mike Lee and FTC Commissioner Melissa Holyoak, who expressed alarm over Meta’s practices.
Starbuck’s lawsuit, submitted to the Delaware Superior Court, claims that Meta disseminated false statements, including allegations of his involvement in the January 6 Capitol riot and connections to Holocaust denialism and white nationalist figures. Starbuck contends these statements, which first came to light in August, are entirely unfounded. He maintains that he was in Tennessee during the Capitol unrest and has never been arrested.
The emotional and reputational damage suffered by Starbuck, he claims, has been exacerbated by growing threats and harm to his business ventures. He is seeking over $5 million in compensatory damages and has urged the court to compel Meta to prevent further defamatory projections from its AI.
Meta has since apologized for the incident. Joel Kaplan, Meta’s chief global affairs officer, acknowledged theAI’s failures and pledged improvements. He emphasized the company’s commitment to rectifying the misinformation and addressing the underlying issues.
In response to the lawsuit, Holyoak reaffirmed the FTC’s focus on tech censorship, highlighting the need for scrutiny over online platforms’ conduct. The agency is currently collecting public comments on tech practices, which end on May 21.
