Cat Survives 380-Foot Plunge at Bryce Canyon, but Owners Tragically Lose Lives

In a heart-wrenching incident at Bryce Canyon National Park, a cat named Mirage survived a shocking 380-foot fall that claimed the lives of her owners, Matthew Nannen, 45, and Bailee Crane, 58. The couple and their elderly tabby were exploring the picturesque Inspiration Point when they fell, prompting a search by the Garfield County Sheriff’s Office.

Rescue teams discovered Mirage on Tuesday night, remarkably unharmed except for two fractured canine teeth and a few broken ribs. According to Best Friends Animal Society, the 12-year-old feline was found in a soft black pet carrier near her guardians, in surprisingly good spirits despite her ordeal. “She was matted and a bit sore, but is friendly upon examination,” the sanctuary reported, noting her normal bloodwork and appetite.

The couple had been living out of a U-Haul after relocating from Arizona, with ties to Florida. While the circumstances leading to their fall remain unclear, it is suspected they crossed guardrails at Inspiration Point. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary plans to find a relative to care for Mirage; if unsuccessful, they will seek an adoptive home for her.
