Utah Utes Prepare for Defensive Challenges Following Talent Departures
Despite a disappointing 5-7 record in their inaugural season in the Big 12, the Utah Utes’ defense demonstrated promise, ranking 28th nationally by allowing 20.7 points per game. However, significant roster changes pose challenges heading into the new season. The Utes face considerable gaps in their defensive line, following key departures due to graduation and transfers. Left tackle Junior Tafuna and end Connor O’Toole have signed with NFL teams, while starting tackle Keanu Tanuvasa has transferred to BYU.
Returning to anchor the defensive line is senior right end Logan Fano, who had a solid season with 35 tackles and 2.5 sacks. Tackle Aliki Vimahi looks to step up after limited play last season, while Dallas Vakalahi—who impressed as a true freshman—will also be crucial. Redshirt juniors Paul Fitzgerald and Lance Holtzclaw bolster the roster, with Holtzclaw bringing experience from Washington. As the Utes regroup, the focus will be on maintaining defensive strength and filling the gaps left by departed players, crucial for their pursuit of a better season ahead.
