Gov. Spencer Cox Advocates for Religious Revival in Utah to Strengthen Communities
SALT LAKE CITY—At the Utah Foundation’s annual luncheon, Governor Spencer Cox emphasized that religion can serve as a "shortcut" to building strong communities and fostering successful states. With Utah boasting the highest levels of religious affiliation and attendance in the U.S., Cox believes a religious revival is crucial for addressing the nation’s pressing issues.
Cox highlighted the concept of social capital, which describes the connections that cultivate high-trust communities. Surveys rank Utah first in social capital due to family unity, charitable giving, and community friendships. He asserted, “The truth is, we’re the most religious state in the country, and that absolutely matters.” While he acknowledged that community-building efforts can arise from various organizations, he underscored that religious institutions uniquely unite individuals across diverse backgrounds, particularly in a time marked by escalating loneliness and societal division.
During his address, Cox humorously reflected on the supportive environment created by such gatherings, which allow individuals to candidly discuss their challenges. He warned against the rise of tribal political identities, urging the need for institutions rooted in community engagement and accountability.
Cox concluded by encouraging attendees to continue their efforts in aiding those in need and highlighted that true fulfillment arises from family, neighborhoods, schools, and faith-based organizations, rather than material pursuits.
The luncheon celebrated the 80th anniversary of the Utah Foundation while previewing the upcoming 2025 Utah Social Capital Project. This initiative aims to further examine the state’s robust middle class and low crime rates, reaffirming Utah’s reputation as a model for prosperous, interconnected communities.
