UDOT Enhances Road Safety with Advanced Visibility Techniques
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is implementing innovative methods to improve the visibility of road markers, particularly during adverse weather conditions. Recognizing the challenges posed by rain and snow, UDOT has initiated a $26 million project to enhance lane striping on major highways along the Wasatch Front, including I-15, I-215, I-80, and SR-201. A key component of this initiative is the application of contrast striping, also known as "tiger tail" striping. This technique involves painting white lines followed by black lines to create a sharp contrast, significantly improving lane visibility, especially on light-colored pavements. Early feedback from areas like Utah County has been positive, with drivers noting a substantial difference in visibility. (abc4.com)
In addition to contrast striping, UDOT is exploring the use of glow-in-the-dark paint to enhance road marker visibility during nighttime and wet conditions. Laboratory tests have shown significant improvements in water durability, though further research is recommended to increase brightness and retention throughout the night before deployment on roadways. To assess the effectiveness of these enhancements, UDOT is collaborating with the University of Utah to develop artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms capable of automatically detecting and evaluating the condition of roadway assets, including pavement markings. This AI-driven approach aims to provide more frequent and accurate assessments, facilitating timely maintenance and ensuring optimal road safety. (udot.utah.gov)
Through these comprehensive efforts, UDOT is committed to creating safer driving conditions by ensuring that road markers remain visible and effective, regardless of weather challenges.
