Martin Scorsese is producing a documentary titled “Aldeas — A New Story,” in collaboration with Pope Francis, which will explore the pontiff’s cinematic contributions through the global educational movement he established prior to his passing. This film will include profound discussions between Scorsese and Pope Francis, featuring what is described as the pope’s final detailed on-camera interview.
The documentary will showcase the work of Scholas Occurrentes, an international non-profit organization founded by Pope Francis in 2013. This initiative aims to foster a “Culture of Encounter” among youth, incorporating filmmaking as a crucial component through the Aldeas initiative. The film will highlight the experiences of young people from Indonesia, Italy, and Gambia as they engage in creating short films.
Both Aldeas Scholas Film and Scorsese’s Sikelia Productions have stated that the film reflects a belief in creativity as a transformative tool for hope. Pope Francis previously referred to Aldeas as a deeply meaningful project that addresses the core aspects of human life, relationships, and societal challenges.
Scorsese emphasized the importance of dialogue and cross-cultural listening, advocating for storytelling as a means to foster understanding and respect among diverse cultures. He noted that cinema serves as an ideal medium for this exchange, allowing individuals to share their personal narratives while maintaining their unique identities.
The documentary does not yet have a release date, and it follows Scorsese’s previous works, including his eight-part docudrama series for Fox Nation, “Martin Scorsese Presents: The Saints.” Pope Francis passed away on April 21, and a conclave for electing a new pope is scheduled for May 7.
