McDonald’s reported a significant decline in U.S. same-store sales, falling 3.6%—the steepest drop since Q2 2020, when sales fell 8.7%. This downturn exceeded forecasts, which had predicted a smaller decline of 1.7%. CEO Chris Kempczinski attributed the slump to consumer uncertainty, noting a marked decline in patronage, especially among middle-income diners, who saw traffic drop by nearly double digits. Low-income customers are also reducing their visits, evident in behavioral changes such as skipping breakfast or opting to eat at home to manage expenses. Conversely, high-income consumer traffic remained stable, highlighting a broader economic trend where wealthier individuals continue to spend while those with lower incomes cut back on discretionary purchases.

The challenges facing McDonald’s mirror broader trends in the restaurant industry; multiple chains, including Chipotle, Domino’s, and Starbucks, reported slowing or declining sales, particularly among lower-income demographics. Additionally, McDonald’s revenues have missed forecasts for three of the last four quarters. Despite these challenges, the chain has maintained its full-year financial outlook and plans to open 2,200 new locations, expecting this expansion to drive a slight sales growth of over 2%.

The company recently launched a promotional campaign linked to “The Minecraft Movie,” which reportedly performed well, alongside refreshed value offerings aimed at competing effectively. However, McDonald’s executives expressed caution regarding consumer sentiment, leading to a 1.5% decline in shares during pre-market trading, indicating investor concerns about the current economic climate and its impact on consumer behavior.
