Wichita, Kan. – Growing Concern: Technology Aims to Combat Texting While Driving
The dangers of texting and driving remain a pressing issue for motorists and passengers alike, despite existing bans. A recent study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety reveals that the “do not disturb” feature on smartphones could reduce distractions significantly, potentially saving lives.
The study, conducted over ten weeks with 18 to 24-year-old drivers, found a staggering 41% decrease in smartphone interactions when the “do not disturb” feature was activated. However, many drivers are hesitant to use this safety function, fearing it might restrict access to navigation and music apps. AAA clarifies that these features are still accessible even when the “do not disturb” mode is enabled.
Shawn Steward from AAA emphasized the importance of putting down phones while driving. “I can’t think of a single message or call that is worth your life or the life of another driver on the road. It can wait,” he stated. He encouraged drivers needing to reply to messages or make calls to pull over to a safe spot first.
Additionally, the study highlighted a knowledge gap regarding how to activate the “do not disturb” feature. For iPhone users, this can be done through “settings” by selecting “focus” and then activating the “driving focus” option. Android users can follow a similar process.
As technology evolves, its potential to enhance road safety is evident. The revelations from this study underscore the need for increased awareness and proper usage of smartphone settings to combat the ongoing issue of texting and driving.
