Utah’s Division of Wildlife Resources Highlights Birdwatching Opportunities

SALT LAKE CITY — The Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is urging residents and visitors to explore birdwatching across Utah, particularly during early mornings when birds are most active. Ideal viewing spots have been recommended, including the Bear River Migratory Bird Refuge and Ouray National Wildlife Refuge, which both offer self-guided auto tours showcasing a variety of species.

In northern Utah, Antelope Island State Park is notable for its scenic views and diverse wildlife encounters. The DWR also emphasizes maintaining safe distances from animals, recommending at least 300 feet from large species like bison and moose. Several reservoirs, such as East Canyon and Hyrum, are great for spotting migrating loons and small songbirds.

Southern Utah offers unique opportunities at locations like the Desert Lake Waterfowl Management Area and Mill Creek near Moab. For those looking to engage further, the DWR is hosting events for World Migratory Bird Day on May 10, including activities at the Eccles Wildlife Education Center and a bird-watching tour in Lehi. The celebrations continue with the Great Salt Lake Bird Festival from May 15 to 18, featuring presentations and guided field trips. Registration for these events is open now.
