Ethnos360, a Florida-based Christian organization previously known as New Tribes Mission, faces a new lawsuit claiming one of its missionaries sexually assaulted a minor overseas 15 years ago. The lawsuit, filed in Seminole County, Florida, involves allegations made by Kayla McClain, now 24, who asserts that she was abused by Nate Horling when she was around 5 years old while living in Indonesia. The lawsuit alleges that Ethnos360 failed to care for McClain’s family after inappropriate conduct was reported in 2012 and did not investigate the claims properly, letting the situation go unaddressed.
This lawsuit follows previous accusations against Ethnos360, where multiple women alleged they were sexually abused by missionaries designated as caretakers in boarding schools meant for children of missionaries. Ethnos360 settled several related lawsuits and claimed to have implemented significant child safety training following a 2010 independent report highlighting the abuse issues.
McClain’s claims detail inappropriate touching and escalating abuse, which she reported to her parents but received inadequate support from Ethnos360’s child safety team. After returning to the U.S. in 2018, McClain struggled with mental health issues and eventually reported her experiences through Ethnos360’s IHART team in 2021 without receiving proper counseling or external reporting of the allegations.
Her attorney argues that Ethnos360 did not take necessary precautions to protect children from abuse and questions the organization’s overall accountability regarding repeated allegations. McClain seeks unspecified damages and emphasizes the need for Ethnos360 to be held accountable to stop the silence surrounding such abuses.
