Will Utah’s Representatives Ever See Congress Fix the Nation’s Immigration System?

Utah’s Senator Curtis Faces Immigration Challenges Amid Calls for Reform

Washington, D.C. – As Utah’s newest U.S. senator, John Curtis is settling into his role with pressing concerns about immigration reform. Curtis, who has served in Congress since 2017, expressed deep frustration over the lack of meaningful progress on the issue, calling it one of his biggest disappointments. Despite multiple attempts over the decades, significant immigration reform has eluded Congress since the 1980s, leaving many, including Curtis, disillusioned.

In an exclusive KSL TV interview, Curtis acknowledged the challenges of introducing new legislation, noting that backlash is common. The Utah Compact, a 2010 document outlining the state’s immigration priorities, continues to resonate among Utah’s congressional delegation, who unanimously support its tenets emphasizing federal responsibility and the importance of a legal immigration process.

Despite previous legislative attempts, recent efforts to address immigration have met with resistance, including a thwarted bipartisan bill last year. Newly elected representatives express hope for cooperation on this complicated issue, urging a shift from political posturing to constructive dialogue. Curtis, with a more influential voice in the Senate, remains determined, stating, “Optimistic or not, I’m going to try.”
