University of Utah Student to Graduate After Rare Spinal Cord Stroke
SALT LAKE CITY — Brian Maynard, a 24-year-old University of Utah student, will graduate this week despite enduring a rare spinal cord stroke that left him mostly paralyzed. Once an avid artist and outdoor enthusiast, Brian has faced a challenging recovery journey since the stroke occurred during his senior year over two years ago.
In a matter of hours during winter break in 2022, a healthy Brian was rushed to the hospital, leaving him unable to breathe or speak independently. His parents, Fiona and Bruce Maynard, relocated to Salt Lake City to support him through his recovery, which has been described as “worse than watching paint dry.”
Now, Brian is regaining limited mobility, including neck movement and the ability to control a mouthpiece for digital creativity. With the help of occupational therapist Tanita Brown, he is working diligently to perform everyday tasks and dreams of returning to drawing.
Graduating from the university’s Games program focused on entertainment arts and engineering is a monumental milestone for Brian, showcasing his resilience and determination. "Every little milestone counts," he says, inspiring those around him with his perseverance.
