Streamlined Permitting for Lisbon Valley Copper Mine Under Trump Administration
April 29, 2025
SALT LAKE CITY — The Trump administration is taking significant steps to expedite the expansion of the Lisbon Valley Copper Mine in southeastern Utah, a project pivotal for increasing domestic mineral production. Following an urgent executive order, the National Energy Dominance Council has included the mine in the FAST-41 program, aimed at reducing bureaucratic hurdles and accelerating federal agency processes for critical mineral projects.
Adam Suess, acting assistant secretary for land and minerals management, emphasized the need to overcome "duplicative processes and regulatory paralysis," asserting that the U.S. must enhance its domestic mineral production to bolster national security. This initiative is particularly vital as the mine is poised to utilize a less invasive extraction method, injecting acids underground to recover copper, which has raised concerns about potential drinking water contamination among locals.
Lisbon Valley Mining Company, a key employer in San Juan County, recently underwent restructuring but aims to rehire furloughed workers as the expansion process progresses. The Bureau of Land Management is currently conducting an environmental review, with a draft expected by August 2026. The project stands to significantly impact both local employment and national mineral independence.
