Historic Return of Women’s Golf to Utah
IVINS, Utah — The LPGA’s highly anticipated Black Desert Championship is set to kick off on Thursday, marking the first women’s golf tournament in Utah since 1964. This event at Black Desert Resort is historic, as it is the only venue currently hosting both PGA and LPGA tournaments within the same year.
Approximately 20,000 spectators are expected, with local talent, including Molli Mulhall from St. George’s Pine View High School and Utah Tech golfer Jane Olsen, showcasing their skills during the final qualifying rounds. Unique challenges, such as a brief delay caused by a rattlesnake spotted near the 15th hole, added to the excitement.
Black Desert Resort has actively prepared for the influx of LPGA players, providing VIP treatment with private jet arrivals at St. George Regional Airport. Event manager Manning emphasized their commitment to enhancing the spectator experience, implementing lessons learned from last year’s men’s tournament.
Improvements include redesigned viewing structures to ensure spectators enjoy closer interactions with the players, addressing past bottlenecks, and creating a more intimate atmosphere. As Utah celebrates this return to women’s golf, anticipation continues to build for a remarkable championship week.
