How the Utah Jazz Scholarship Program Supports Students in Pursuing Higher Education

Press Release

Utah Jazz Scholarship Program Changes Lives for Aspiring College Students

SALT LAKE CITY — The journey to higher education is unique for everyone, as exemplified by Wil Thomas and Janet Lopez, who both dreamt of attending college after their high school experiences in Utah. Influenced by their backgrounds—Thomas a baseball player from Timpanogos High and Lopez a Student Body Officer from Taylorsville High—they often grappled with financial concerns about college.

Their outlook changed dramatically when they learned about the Utah Jazz Scholarship Program, which offers four-year full-cost-of-attendance scholarships to 114 deserving high school students, reflecting the team’s wins over two NBA seasons. Both Thomas, class of 2021, and Lopez, class of 2022, were thrilled to receive the scholarship after a nerve-wracking selection process featuring surprise announcements by Jazz players.

Currently, Thomas is completing his senior year at Utah Valley University, while Lopez is in her junior year at the University of Utah. The scholarship has not only alleviated financial burdens but also provided invaluable mentorship and networking opportunities. As they advocate for the program, both acknowledge the lasting impact it will have on future generations. “Hard work meets incredible opportunity,” Lopez states, highlighting the transformative potential of the Utah Jazz Scholarship Program.
