Explore Hidden Gems: Capitol Reef National Park Recommended Amid Staffing Challenges

As summer approaches, RVShare’s latest report highlights alternative destinations to the over-visited U.S. national parks, particularly in Utah. Amid staffing shortages and uncertainties regarding visitor experiences, parks like Zion National Park may experience increased challenges. Phil Francis, chairman of the Coalition to Protect America’s National Parks, warned that reduced staffing could lead to unclean facilities and limited services.

In light of these potential issues, Francis encourages visitors to call ahead and check which facilities are operational. He also suggests exploring lesser-known parks, like Capitol Reef National Park, which sees about 1.3 million fewer visitors annually than Zion.

Capitol Reef, situated near Torrey, Utah, spans 377 square miles and features stunning canyons and dramatic cliffs, comparable to Zion. The park’s highlight is the Waterpocket Fold, a spectacular geological formation that provides ample hiking opportunities. With its designation as an International Dark Sky Park, Capitol Reef is also an excellent spot for stargazing. Travelers seeking a more serene experience this summer may find Capitol Reef to be the perfect hidden gem.
