Considering Nuclear Power? Potential Locations for Utah’s First Nuclear Plant

Delta, Utah – Potential Nuclear Power Plant Sparks Debate

In a bold move to bolster its nuclear energy initiatives, Utah has signed a memorandum with the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA) and EnergySolutions to evaluate the Intermountain Power Project (IPP) site for a small-scale nuclear reactor. Jeff Richardson, EnergySolutions’ chief project officer, emphasized the importance of assessing the site’s viability.

The IPP, primarily supplying electricity to California, has faced political challenges while transitioning from coal. Despite this, Utah Governor Spencer Cox supports nuclear energy through his "Operation Gigawatt," citing a growing demand for power, particularly from data centers.

Millard County Commissioner Vicki Lyman views the reactor as an opportunity for economic growth and resource efficiency, noting its safety and reduced water usage compared to coal plants. However, she expressed concerns over legislation allowing the state to claim significant tax revenues from the proposed plant, advocating for local control of funds.

Opposing voices include the Healthy Environmental Alliance of Utah (HEAL), whose executive director Lexi Tuddenham criticized the project as financially beneficial only to investors, while raising concerns about costs and EnergySolutions’ track record. Governor Cox recently held a ceremonial signing for energy bills, including the nuclear legislation, signaling a pivotal moment for Utah’s energy future.
