South Salt Lake Neighborhood to Stay Evacuated Overnight Due to Gas Leak and Fire

Mandatory Evacuations Ordered in South Salt Lake Due to Gas Leak and Fire

South Salt Lake, UT — Mandatory evacuations were ordered Sunday evening for residents in a several-block radius due to a gas leak and subsequent fire. City officials announced evacuations for the area between 3300-3500 South and West Temple to 200 West.

The incident began shortly after 5 p.m. when an unoccupied truck caught fire, possibly ignited by a downed power line. While firefighters were on the scene, they discovered flames emanating from the ground and identified a gas leak under the roadway, prompting immediate coordination with the gas company.

The gas was successfully shut off by 9 p.m., and the fire was extinguished; however, the evacuation order remained in effect as of 9:45 p.m. Fire Chief Terry Addison confirmed the order would remain through the night until further assessments could be made the following morning. TRAX services were temporarily suspended, but were restored around 10 p.m.

An evacuation shelter was established at a nearby church located at 3805 S. Main Street, welcoming both residents and their pets. Approximately 300 individuals were evacuated from the region during this incident.
