Shooting at Elizabeth City State University Claims One Life, Injures Six

A shooting at Elizabeth City State University in North Carolina on Sunday resulted in one death and six injuries, prompting a campus lockdown. The incident occurred in the center of the campus following Yard Fest, the concluding event of a weeklong celebration called Viking Fest at the historically Black university. A 24-year-old man, who was not a student, was pronounced dead, with his identity being withheld pending family notification.

Four individuals were reported with gunshot wounds, including three students, while two additional students were injured due to the chaos that ensued. Fortunately, none of the injuries were life-threatening, and all injured parties were transported to a local hospital for treatment.

The university expressed deep sorrow over the “senseless act,” emphasizing its commitment to student safety. After the lockdown, which restricted access to the campus center, university officials increased security patrols as a precaution. As of later Sunday, access restrictions to certain areas remained in effect.

Elizabeth City State University, which serves about 2,300 students, is located approximately 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The university community is grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event, reflecting broader concerns over campus safety and violence.
