EnergySolutions Partners with Intermountain Power Agency for Advanced Nuclear Development in Utah
EnergySolutions has announced a strategic partnership with the Intermountain Power Agency (IPA) and the state of Utah to explore the development of advanced nuclear power generation at a coal site near Delta, Utah. This initiative will include the potential deployment of advanced small modular reactors (SMRs). A newly signed memorandum of understanding facilitates discussions on utilizing the IPA-owned site, which currently houses two coal-fired units being replaced by an 840 MW natural gas plant.
The new gas facility is designed to gradually transition from a natural gas-hydrogen blend to 100% hydrogen by 2045, serving as a cornerstone for cleaner energy solutions. EnergySolutions highlighted that leveraging existing infrastructure at the site will aid in the transition to nuclear energy. Cameron Cowan, IPA’s general manager, emphasized the site’s unique positioning for advanced nuclear considerations.
Additionally, Terrestrial Energy, a US-based SMR developer, has recently entered a collaborative agreement with EnergySolutions for siting and deploying Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR) plants. This partnership marks a significant step toward diversifying energy sources in Utah while addressing the state’s commitments to clean energy.
