Utah TE Caleb Lohner’s Football Journey Progresses with Denver Broncos Draft – Deseret News

Caleb Lohner’s NFL Journey Begins with Broncos

Denver, CO – In an unexpected twist of fate, Caleb Lohner, a former collegiate basketball player, has transitioned to football and earned a spot in the NFL after an impressive single season at the University of Utah. The Denver Broncos selected Lohner with the 241st pick in the recent NFL Draft, marking the fourth consecutive year a Utes player has been drafted.

Lohner, a towering 6-foot-7 and 250 pounds, showcased his potential as a tight end during his brief football stint, catching four receptions—each resulting in a touchdown. This remarkable feat follows his background as a basketball player at Baylor and BYU, where he averaged just 2.4 points and 2.3 rebounds in his final year.

His journey to the gridiron was prompted by tight ends coach Freddie Whittingham, who recognized Lohner’s athletic capabilities. After Lohner entered the transfer portal post-basketball season, he opted to explore football despite not playing since eighth grade. Whittingham praised Lohner’s physical attributes, stating he possessed all the traits needed to excel as a tight end.

Though Lohner’s football experience was limited to only 57 snaps and nine targets, he made every opportunity count, including a notable kick block on special teams. After his football season, he returned to basketball at Utah and averaged 2.8 points per game.

The Broncos, known for their unconventional player choices, are excited to integrate Lohner into their roster, where he will join five other former Utes. Lohner expressed gratitude for the opportunity, underscoring his passion for the sport and determination to contribute to the Broncos’ success. Coach Sean Payton is expected to explore creative ways to utilize Lohner’s unique skill set as he strives to make the final roster.
