Karene Reid Signs with Denver Broncos Following NFL Draft
DENVER, CO — Former Utah linebacker Karene Reid has signed a free agent contract with the Denver Broncos, following his exclusion from the NFL Draft over the weekend. Expected to be selected in the seventh round or picked up as a priority free agent, Reid’s signing marks an important step in his professional career.
Throughout his collegiate journey, Reid showcased impressive performance, recognized as a second-team All-Pac-12 Conference player during his sophomore and junior years. Last season, he served as team captain and recorded 54 tackles in just eight games after missing four due to an ankle injury. Notably, Reid started 39 of the 43 games he played, achieving 10 or more tackles in three games, including a standout performance against UCF in his final game, contributing to a much-needed victory.
At the NFL Combine, Reid ranked 22nd among linebackers in production and 25th overall, highlighting his athleticism and capabilities. Although he is often viewed as undersized at 6 feet and 231 pounds—drawing comparisons to a big safety rather than a traditional linebacker—Reid possesses strong instincts and a high football IQ, making him an appealing addition to the Broncos.
Reid’s family has a rich football history; his father, Spencer Reid, played linebacker for BYU and briefly in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers and Indianapolis Colts. His brother, Gabe, played for the Utes last year after transferring from Stanford.
While Reid will face challenges stepping into a professional role, scouts praise his play-reading ability, tenacity, and tackling skills, projecting him primarily as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor for the Broncos.
