Japanese Culture Shines at Salt Lake City’s 20th Annual Nihon Matsuri Japan Festival

SALT LAKE CITY (KUTV) — The spirit of Japan came alive in Salt Lake City as thousands gathered for the 20th annual Nihon Matsuri Japan Festival in the Japan Town area. This vibrant celebration showcased martial arts, sumo demonstrations, and a lively cosplay contest, alongside over 30 food and merchant vendors.

Festival-goer Kevin Hanft expressed his delight, stating, “I always like getting the food, seeing what kind of different Japanese foods they have at the different booths, and just having a good time.”

Char Floyd Mori, a festival organizer, emphasized the event’s mission of cultural education and community engagement. “There’s a rich heritage,” Mori remarked, noting that many within the Japanese community have contributed to Salt Lake City’s development for over a century.

He highlighted that the festival serves as a platform for showcasing a unique culture filled with beauty and value. With attendance typically ranging from 8,000 to 10,000, the Nihon Matsuri festival underscores the importance of celebrating diversity and fostering cultural connection in the community.
