Utah Senator Backs Ukraine During Trump’s Peace Negotiations – Deseret News

Sen. John Curtis Advocates for Continued Support for Ukraine in Salt Lake City

Salt Lake City, UT – In a strong show of support for Ukraine, Sen. John Curtis (R-Utah) emphasized the urgency of U.S. involvement in the ongoing conflict with Russia during two events on Friday. Speaking at a gathering hosted by the U.S. Global Leadership Coalition, Curtis firmly stated, “Putin is not our friend,” arguing that backing Ukraine is vital not only for European stability but also for American economic interests.

Curtis highlighted that supporting Ukraine could deter China’s potential invasion of Taiwan, a scenario that could significantly impact the U.S. economy by cutting GDP by as much as 10%. He stressed the importance of Congress regaining control over tariff policies, which he believes should not have been delegated to the executive branch.

“The outcome of negotiations with Russia will influence when President Xi decides to act on Taiwan,” he remarked. Reiterating his commitment to allies, Curtis reflected on the necessity of recognizing Putin’s aggression, stating, “If we want to lead, we have to be careful with what we’re cutting.”

The senator’s comments received strong applause from an audience of business leaders and policymakers. Retired U.S. Navy Vice Adm. Robert Harward shared the stage, reinforcing Curtis’s message. Curtis aims to bring attention to the need for a unified stance against aggression while balancing domestic energy production and support for sustainable policies.

With legislation focused on countering Chinese influence, including the Taiwan Allies Fund Act, Curtis remains committed to addressing China’s increasing assertiveness. He concluded by emphasizing that politics should not overshadow the imperative of supporting Ukraine and maintaining American interests abroad.
