Penn State Students Stage Hilarious “Breaking Bad” Musical

University Park, PA – Inside a lively Penn State classroom, students and faculty gathered on Thursday for a unique performance titled “A Freaking Bad Musical,” brilliantly adapting the hit show “Breaking Bad.” Led by writer Evan Stocker, the show, performed in Thomas 100, runs through Saturday and explores the tumultuous life of Walter White, a high school chemistry teacher turned meth producer, after receiving a terminal cancer diagnosis.

The narrative follows Walter as he grapples with financial strains and medical bills. His desperate decision to partner with former student Jesse Pinkman leads them into a chaotic double life. The musical captures the dark comedy and dramatic twists that ensue as the duo transforms a modest RV into a mobile drug lab, all while family tensions escalate back in Albuquerque.

Audience members were treated to a blend of humor and poignant moments. First-year English student Becca Williams shared her experience, stating, “It was really funny. I was so confused the whole time… but now I know everything I need to know about it.” She particularly appreciated the touching relationship between Walter and Jesse, calling it “beautiful.”

Others echoed her sentiments, with audience member Ella Enck declaring the musical “10 out of 10 better than the show” for its originality. Lila Dibble found joy in Jesse’s comedic antics, especially a scene where he mischievously drinks chemicals.

The performance culminated in a rousing rendition of “I’m a Believer” by The Monkees, leaving audiences laughing and entertained. This creative endeavor highlights the talent and enthusiasm of Penn State students in a fresh, humorous retelling of a beloved narrative.
