Miller Sports and Entertainment Acquires Real Salt Lake and Utah Royals
SALT LAKE CITY — In a significant move for Utah’s sports landscape, Miller Sports and Entertainment announced the acquisition of Real Salt Lake (RSL) and the Utah Royals FC on Friday. The deal was unveiled during a press conference at America First Field, marking a new chapter for the organizations.
Steve Starks, CEO of Miller Sports + Entertainment, confirmed the acquisition of controlling interests in RSL Football holdings. Notably, David Blitzer will remain a partner, while Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) steps away from involvement. The acquisition encompasses not only the Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, but also the Utah Royals of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), as well as Real Monarchs of MLS NEXT Pro and the RSL Academy.
In his remarks, Starks expressed enthusiasm about joining the RSL community. "We are grateful for David Blitzer’s trust… and our combined experience will elevate soccer in Utah," he said.
Blitzer, who previously purchased RSL in January 2022, emphasized the alignment of values with Miller Sports. He highlighted the importance of having strong local partners in building a successful team culture.
The Miller family has a storied history in Utah sports, beginning with the acquisition of the Utah Jazz in the 1980s. MLS Commissioner Don Garber praised the new partnership, noting the Millers’ commitment to community and youth sports.
As the local soccer scene prepares for this transition, fans can look forward to continued coverage and excitement around the teams as they aim for championships in the seasons ahead. Real Salt Lake games will be available for viewing via Apple TV’s MLS Season Pass, while coverage will also be broadcasted on KSL radio stations.
The future of soccer in Utah seems bright, with strong leadership and a passionate fanbase fueling the excitement.
