Utah State Softball Makes History with Mountain West Championship Berth
LOGAN, Utah – Utah State softball (26-22, 11-8 MW) clinched a historic spot in the Mountain West Championship for the first time, following a doubleheader against UNLV on Saturday. The Aggies won the first game 12-4 but fell 10-2 in the second.
The Mountain West Tournament, scheduled for May 7-10 in San Diego, marks Utah State’s first postseason appearance since the 2017 National Invitational Softball Championship and the first conference tournament since the 2011 WAC Tournament.
In Game 1, Utah State overcame an early deficit, thanks to key hits from infielder Alex Bunton and Ariel Fifita, ultimately securing a run-rule victory. Senior Claudia Medina shone with a 3-for-3 performance, earning three RBIs. Pitcher Emmalyn Brinka delivered a stellar showing on the mound, allowing just four hits.
However, in the second match, the Aggies struggled offensively, managing only six hits. UNLV consistently added to their lead, and despite a late home run from Lyndsey Madrigal, Utah State couldn’t close the gap.
The Aggies will conclude their regular season next weekend with a three-game series at Boise State, as they build momentum heading into the tournament. For updates, follow @USUSoftball on social media.
