Utah State Supreme Court rejects Kouri Richins’ appeal regarding jury selection in murder trial

The Utah State Supreme Court ruled that the jury in Kouri Richins’ murder case can be selected exclusively from Summit County, denying the defense’s request for a change of venue or a jury pool from both Salt Lake and Summit counties. Richins is accused of poisoning her husband with fentanyl. A survey showed that 70 percent of respondents in the county were aware of the case due to media coverage. Despite this, the trial will proceed with a jury selected solely from Summit County. Richins’ defense team filed an appeal and motion to stay the case, which was ultimately denied by the state supreme court. The trial, originally set for April 28th, has been postponed while the appeal over jury selection is reviewed. The ruling was made by Associate Chief Justice John Pearce, with all five Utah State Supreme Court justices agreeing. The case has garnered significant media attention, but the court has determined that there is no need for an expanded jury pool. At this time, no new trial date has been set.
