Press Release: Advocating for Utah’s Education and Community Needs
Congressman Burgess Owens recently expressed optimism about the education landscape in Utah, stating, "The whole purpose of education is to make sure our kids are the best prepared in the entire world." However, this sentiment starkly contrasts with the harsh realities affecting the state.
Utah grapples with alarming suicide rates, ranking 7th in the nation, as over 2,000 lives were lost between 2021 and 2023. Additionally, more than 22% of high school students have contemplated suicide. Special education services remain significantly underfunded, and programs like Starbase Hill, which introduced STEM learning, have been shuttered due to lack of federal support.
Many families face discrimination, with civil rights complaints often ignored. This is particularly troubling given Owens’ history as a trailblazer in sports integration, raising questions about his current stance on civil rights for minorities and immigrants.
Owens must prioritize the voices of all Utahns and work collaboratively with diverse communities. Our students and educators are entitled to supportive, equitable solutions that foster unity, not divisiveness. It’s time for Owens to truly act on his commitment to represent all constituents in Utah.
