Evacuation order issued and major highway closed due to New Jersey wildfire

Evacuation orders were issued in New Jersey as a wildfire in Ocean County grew to over 3,200 acres, prompting around 3,000 people to evacuate from the area of the Jones Road Fire in Barnegat Township. The cause of the fire is under investigation and it was only 5% contained as of Tuesday night. Although no deaths or injuries have been reported, 1,320 structures were threatened by the fire. The Garden State Parkway was affected by the blaze, with traffic being diverted at Exit 80 southbound and Exit 63 northbound. The southern part of Ocean County and the state are experiencing abnormally dry or drought conditions, contributing to the wildfire risk. The U.S. Drought Monitor has listed the region as under drought conditions and the New Jersey Forest Fire Service has categorized the area as having a “high” fire risk. The situation is ongoing as firefighters work to contain the wildfire and protect the affected areas.
