Utah Valley warming centers shutting down, providing resource classes

As winter warming centers in Utah begin to close for the season, concerns rise for people experiencing homelessness. The Utah Valley warming centers will close on April 30, with other centers across the state already shut down. Community Action Services and Food Bank hosted a Community Resource Fair to connect individuals with housing, addiction treatment, mental health services, and other resources after the warming centers close. The first full season of the Utah Valley Warming Centers saw more people than expected, with an average of 78-113 individuals utilizing 75 beds per night. Despite challenges, the centers provided stability for many people and helped them access housing, employment, and rehab resources. Housing Director Kena Mathews expressed the importance of giving people a safe place to stay, allowing them to focus on improving their lives. Plans are in place to address the disparity between the number of visitors and available beds before the centers reopen in October.
