Lockheed Martin Harnessing NGAD Technology for Enhanced F-35 Development

Lockheed Martin has decided not to challenge the U.S. Air Force’s selection of Boeing for the F-47 contract, after losing in the NGAD competition. Instead, the company plans to transfer technologies from its bid into the F-35 program to enhance it to a fifth-generation-plus capability. Lockheed CEO, Jim Taiclet, explained that the company received a classified briefing on the Air Force’s decision and will not pursue a protest. They will apply the developed technology to both the F-35 and F-22 programs, turning the F-35 chassis into a “Ferrari” with enhanced stealth, long-range tracking systems, and new weaponry. Despite development setbacks, the focus remains on delivering upgraded capability through the F-35 platform.

Although Lockheed Martin is currently excluded from sixth-generation fighter programs, the company intends to sustain its annual production of 156 aircraft. While facing uncertainty in future F-35 procurement, the company is confident in maintaining production rates through international opportunities. Taiclet stated that the aeronautics team believes they can make up for any potential decrease in U.S. F-35 production.

The F-35 program has faced delays and cost overruns in implementing TR-3, an essential upgrade for future Block 4 improvements. Lockheed Martin has completed 98% of TR-3 capabilities, but the readiness for combat has not been confirmed. Despite challenges, the company’s focus remains on enhancing the F-35 platform with new technologies and capabilities.
