Despite federal deadline, NY Gov. affirms congestion pricing program will continue

Despite the federal government’s deadline, New York City’s $9 congestion toll on drivers in Manhattan’s busiest areas will remain in effect. The toll has been in place since January, with the goal of reducing traffic and providing funding for the subway system. The U.S. Department of Transportation has been pressuring New York to scrap the program, but so far, a federal judge has ruled in favor of the toll’s legality. Both Governor Hochul and the MTA have stated that unless directed otherwise by the court, the tolls will continue to be collected. The Trump administration has been fighting against the toll, arguing that it unfairly burdens drivers outside of New York City. Despite multiple deadlines and pushbacks, the toll remains in place and will likely continue until the case is fully resolved in the Fall. The program has been successful in reducing traffic and increasing business in the area. The toll charges most cars entering Manhattan’s central business district a peak fee of $9 during weekdays and weekends. The federal government has been adamant in its efforts to end the toll, but so far, New York City has stood firm in keeping the cameras on and the tolls in place.
