Biochemist from University of Utah recognized as one of Time Magazine’s most influential individuals in 2025

University of Utah biochemistry professor Wesley Sundquist and virologist Tomas Cihlar from Gilead Sciences have been recognized by Time magazine for their groundbreaking work in developing a first-of-its-kind HIV treatment and prevention drug called lenacapavir. The drug has shown nearly 100% efficacy in preventing HIV infection for at-risk individuals.

Sundquist and his team studied HIV capsids, the protein shell responsible for releasing the virus’ genetic material, which led to the discovery that the capsid’s structure is sensitive and an ideal target for disrupting the virus. This research was instrumental in the development of lenacapavir, a long-acting treatment that only requires biannual injections.

The drug is currently being reviewed by the FDA for approval as a pre-exposure prophylaxis to prevent HIV contraction. Clinical trials in South Africa and Uganda have shown promising results, with a target action date of June 19.

Sundquist emphasized that scientific breakthroughs are a result of teamwork and collaboration, giving credit to graduate students, postdoctoral students, and the support from Gilead Sciences. This recognition highlights the ongoing efforts to combat HIV/AIDS globally.
