BYU secures last-minute victory against Utah with field goal following controversial penalty

The No. 9 BYU Cougars remain undefeated after pulling off an improbable 22-21 comeback victory over Utah. Trailing for the entirety of the second half, BYU capitalized on a crucial fourth-down holding penalty against Utah to secure the win. Utah’s athletic director criticized the officiating, claiming the game was “stolen” from them.

BYU struggled offensively throughout the game, with quarterback Jake Retzlaff sacked and pressured by the Utah defense. Despite this, Retzlaff managed to connect with Chase Roberts for a game-changing 30-yard gain late in the fourth quarter. Kicker Will Ferrin sealed the victory with a 44-yard field goal with just three seconds left on the clock.

Utah started Brandon Rose at QB for the first time this season, but their offense faltered in the second half, allowing BYU to come back for the win. Despite a strong defensive effort from the Utes, they were unable to stop BYU’s late-game surge.

BYU’s undefeated record places them in contention for the Big 12 title game, with just two more wins needed to secure a spot. The Cougars are currently 6-0 in the conference and lead the standings, positioning them well for a shot at the championship game. With their recent victory over Utah, BYU is now one of the only three power conference teams remaining undefeated, along with Oregon and Indiana.
