Republicans plan to mainly skip town halls during recess

Republican members of Congress are avoiding in-person town halls during the two-week recess, following advice from Rep. Richard Hudson. The majority of upcoming town hall events will be hosted by Democrats, with only a few Republicans, including Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Byron Donalds, planning to hold town halls. Donalds has restricted registration to residents of his district, as did Greene. Republican lawmakers faced public ire over Medicaid cuts and spending cuts in previous town halls. Democratic lawmakers are also facing frustration at in-person events from their own party members. Many Democrats are seeking a stronger reaction to Trump from their elected leaders, despite national polling numbers showing a desire for bipartisan progress. Democrats are planning a series of “People’s Town Halls” in districts represented by Republicans. Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are also holding town hall events denouncing Trump, Republicans, and Democrats. Their tour has drawn large crowds and will continue in California, Utah, Idaho, and Montana. The NRCC criticized the Democrats’ town hall strategy as pandering to the far-left radicals.
